Location: Zurich, SwitzerlandEmployment Type: Full-TimeDepartment: Systems Engineering Team The RoleYou will work on building a quantum computer, one of the most challenging emerging technologies of our time. You will translate scientific requirements into precise designs, guide components from the initial sketch through CAD design to manufacturing and quality control, and see your work become part of a highly complex system. Close collaboration with researchers is an integral part of your role: you will learn to understand their requirements, challenge them where necessary, and find practical engineering solutions that work in the real world. Responsibilities- Plan, develop, and design mechanical assemblies and prototypes.- Work closely with experimental physicists to translate scientific requirements into engineering solutions.- Analyse projects, including scheduling, cost estimation, and feasibility assessments.- Produce detailed engineering drawings suitable for manufacturing and maintain design documentation.- Perform engineering calculations and FEM structural analyses, provide design advice, and assess material requirements.- Procure components and coordinate with manufacturing partners.- Define test criteria, evaluate test results, and derive design improvements. Requirements- A degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or a related field.- At least 3 years of professional experience in mechanical engineering or a related field.- Strong proficiency in CAD software (experience with Autodesk Inventor is an advantage) and a solid understanding of mechanical design principles.- Basic knowledge of thermodynamics, vibration damping, and static and dynamic calculations.- Ability to manage projects independently and systematically from initial concept through to manufacturing readiness.- A pragmatic, solution-oriented mindset and flexibility in tackling new challenges.- Good command of German and English, as well as strong teamwork skills. Nice to Have- Experience with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) technology, cryogenic applications, superconducting magnets, or cleanroom environments.- Knowledge of 3D printing, electronics, IT, or optical setups.- Hands-on experience in manufacturing or assembly. What We Offer- A varied and challenging role at an innovative high-tech startup.- Long-term career prospects and diverse opportunities for professional development in a forward-looking company.- Competitive compensation and equity participation through a stock option plan.- A dynamic, motivated, international team with a flat hierarchy, built around four core principles: excellence, reliability, trust, and open feedback.- Flexible working arrangements and hours.- 30 days of annual leave. ImpactTogether with our hardware team, you will develop the next generation of quantum computers based on ZuriQ’s architecture from the ground up and bring them into operation at a new laboratory site. Your designs will sit at the intersection of quantum physics and precision mechanical engineering, directly contributing to physics experiments. Your work will have a significant influence on the development of our technology and help drive it towards industrialisation and scalability. We look forward to receiving your application, including your CV and a short cover letter. We are an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.
